NZPA-Reuter Havana The Soviet Union and its Communist allies are studying plans for the large-scale use of compressed methane gas to fuel all kinds of vehicles, according to a Soviet speech. Nikolai Baibakov, Soviet president of the planning committee of the Communist trade alliance, Comecon, said that gas-driven cars and lorries would help cut demand for Soviet oil. “To satisfy the demands of the (Comecon) countries for oil, we have begun working towards co-opera-tion in using compressed and liquified methane gas as motor fuel,” he told the annual Comecon conference in the Cuban capital, Havana.
