PA Wellington The . Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, has supported the idea of an independent committee to look into the manning of New Zealand ships. It was among the more worth-while ideas in the previous Government’s White Paper on shipping — being reviewed by the Government, he told the Wellington branch of the Company of Master Mariners. ■ The proposal called for Mr Prebble to convene ah independently chaired committee - of maritime union and ship owner representatives to find the causes of

inefficent use of manpower aboard New Zealand ships. "Properly structured, such a maritime resources committee could, I believe, serve as the primary instrument to set the basis for the management of innovation and technological change in our shipping industry,” Mr Prebble said. The future well being of the shipping industry was tied to the flexibility and adaptability of the maritime unions in accepting the introduction of new technology, modem work practices, and innovative shipboard management, he said.
