Aircraft motor ‘stopped’

PA Tauranga The engine of the microlight that plunged into a paddock at Pongakawa, killing the pilot and a passenger, had stopped before, the crash, said an inspector of air accidents, Mr John Goddard, yesterday. Mr Goddard said he was still investigating what caused this to happen.

The crash on Wednesday was the first double microlight fatality in New Zealand, killing a Maketu potter, Mr Nelson Phare, and his passenger, a Mangakino schoolteacher, Mr lan Matheson. Mr Phare had five children, aged between nine and 15 years.
