Tramper thought safe

The police yesterday called off their search for the Alaskan missing on a tramping trip near Lewis Pass, and now believe that he is safe and well.

David Burr, aged 48, had left an entry in the book at the Boyle Flat hut at the southern end of the St James Walkway on Wednesday, said a spokesman for the Christchurch police. Also, the weather was good and other trampers were in the area, said the spokesman. However, the police would still like to hear from Mr Burr.

A Royal New Zealand Air Force Iroquois helicopter was used yesterday to check the walkway huts.
