Japanese arts
A permanent home for what is planned to be the finest display of Japanese art in Europe is to be established in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The museum which already holds about 40,000 Japanese .artworks, including metalwork, lacquers, ceramics, textiles, sculptures, prints and carvings is to use its main exhibition gallery for the new display. Japanese industrial companies are involved in the
payment for the £250,000 formation which must be financed by private sponsorship because of the museum’s shortage of money. The decision to establish such a permanent display has been described as marking the end to its system of having spectacular one-off shows such as the rococco exhibition on display at present which cost more than £lOO,OOO (?NZ215,000) to stage, with treasures insured for more than £l5 million.
