Lessons from Falklands

One of the lessons learnt during the Falklands War between Britain and Argentina was that when a ship is hit and catches fire, it is the smoke and not the flames that is most likely to be lethal. Now, two years after the

conflict, there is a British product on the market which could do as much for sailors trapped by smoke as the life belt has done for ended up in the water. It is called ELSA — Emergency Life Support

Apparatus — and is basically a plastic hood with its own air supply. Tonight’s edition of the 8.8.C.’s “Practical World” series (National programme, 10.10 p.m.) will look at the new device.
