Upper Gut impressive Rangiora trialist

Upper Cut, a candidate for the Blooms Plate at Motukarara on Saturday, appeared ready for the assignment when he competed at the Rangiora trials yesterday. The Ruling gelding was nine lengths behind Crescent at the finish of the all classes 1200 m event but was travelling particularly well at the line without being asked for a serious effort. Crescent, in the hands of Warren Stevenson, cut out the 1200 m in a respectable Imin 12s. Apprenticed to Crescent’s trainer, Bevan Laming, Stevenson, who weighs only 34kg, was having his first

trial ride yesterday. Bo Diddley (third) and Hide the Loot (fourth) also returned attractive performances, both finishing under snug holds. Le Valet narrowly held out Reingard in the all classes 1600 m event, although the latter, a lightweight candidate for Saturday’s Banks Peninsula Cup, was hard held at the line. Le Valet, which contests the Blooms Plate on Saturday, recorded Imin 39.275. Star Lord was a very impressive winner of the 800 m two-year-old qualifying trial, recording a smart 49.76 s in the hands of Paul Atkinson.
