Road walk to Auck. veteran
A former national men’s road walking champion, Morrie Hinton (Auckland) won the national veteran men’s 15km road walking championship in Christchurch on Saturday. Hinton, who took the 30km senior title in 1972, took 79min 10s for the 15km. He was also fastest in his age group (45-50). Second in the veteran event was Dave Cameron (Hamilton) in 82min 595. Cameron has recently moved to Christchurch and will be competing in the province in future. The 15km veteran race was held in
conjunction with the senior 30km race, won by S. Donnelly (Auckland) in 2hrs 39:365, with W. McNoe (Otago) second in 2hrs 57:43s and Canterbury’s Wayne Marriott, aged 19, third in 3hrs 05:475. Frank Alpin (Canterbury) finished the 15km in 92min 09s to win the over-55 section, then continued in the 30km race until he withdrew when he fell at about 27km. The only woman to finish the senior 30km was Rhonda Patterson, of Auckland, who took 3hr 39min 425.
