Three-year-olds work well at Hastings
Special correspondent Hastings The three-year-olds, Our Buddy and Tommo’s Tornado, hit out well in training at the Hastings track yesterday morning as both prepared for Saturday’s Rangitikei meeting. Fast work was carried out on the plough (deep) and No. 1 grass (fast). Our Buddy and Tommo’s Tornado stayed together throughout 1000 m on the plough in lmin I.Bs, the last 600 m in 37.35. Both horses looked to have plenty in reserve at the finish. Our Buddy contests the Landsdown three-year-old, a set weight event over 1600 m at the Rangitikei meeting.Providing he races kindly in that event, his trainer, Patrick Campbell, will then send him south for the $70,000 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600 m on November 7. Our Buddy raced too keenly for his own good in the Wellington Guineas yet still managed to rugfiourth. Campbell is hoping the
Avaray colt settles better at Awapuni. Tommo’s Tornado is to contest the McKelvie Memorial (1400 m on Saturday. He could tackle one of the open sprints at the coming Napier Park meeting before going to Woodville for the three-year-old “6000” (1400 m on November 21. The winner of this race gains an automatic start in the $120,000 Levin Bayer Classic on November 28. Time Honours yesterday morning went to Bar Doll and Friendly Gesture, both members of Norval Temperton’s stable. They only had lightweights up yet still did well to cut out 600 m on the plough in 35.75. Bar Doll was an impressive last-start winner at Waipukurau, while Friendly. Gesture is by the boom sire of the moment, Otehi Bay. Lady Arabella, another nominated for Saturday’s Rangitikei meeting, worked in quietly from the 1000 m peg on the plough, being timed over the last 800 m in 52.25, the last 600 m in 38.65.
She came back looking very big in condition but is starting to fine down again now. Nevada Prince was let run along over 600 m in 39.1 s to blow him out for the Howsie Maiden at today’s Pahiatua meeting. Our Boyfriend was not hurried when running 800 m in 55.75, the last 600 m in 425, while Tallboy went over the same ground in 53.5 s and 39.75. Saab was one of only a few horses to work on the No. 1 grass and sprinted 600 m in 36.75. Raupare Lady (Cullen) ran 600 m in 38.85, while Narrator (Hall) clocked 41.8 s for an easy 600 m. Amberman was restricted to three-quarter pace on the plough and the crack mare, Burletta, was another which did pacework. She looks as bright as ever and her proposed trip to Melbourne is still on at this stage. She is booked to fly across on November 1, on the same plane that Kiwi and Rose and+Thistle are scheduled to leaifjF.
