Stablemates show their ability in training
By J. J. BOYLE Ariage and Rattle the Sabre, successful four-year-olds for the Peter Jones stable this season, galloped pleasingly in training at Riccarton yesterday. On performance and potential, they should perform creditably in close at hand engagements, at the Banks Peninsula and the New Zealand Cup meetings. They were paired for 1200 m on the No. 6 grass at Riccarton yesterday, and got through their task in Imin 20.85, quickening readily for the last 600 m in 38.45. Ariage won at the Timaru meeting at his last start, and looks promising
material for a race like the Benson and Hedges at Riccarton next week. Ariage, a close relation of. the Wellington Guineas winner, Kingdom Bay, has improved with each race this season, and was a convincing winner over a middle distance in the hands of Gary Phillips at Ashburton last month. Donizetti and Chiasso, members of John Bourne’s team, looked bright and worked with a will as they ran through 1200 m in Imin 21s, the last 600 m in 37.25. Donizetti has shown a dislike for running close to the rails in his races, but he has something of a talent
when he gets plenty of racing room. Chiasso has been shaping well enough in training to come up with a bold fresh run. Young Hawk, another promising member of the Bourne team, was paired with Tung Hai yesterday to sprint 600 m on terms in 39.85. Sound Note, with a Palatable gelding for company, ran in from the 600 m in 395. On the plough Wat O Sue and Binkie’s Pal ran 800 m in 51.85. Gums a Calling (by In the Purple), a member of Murray’s McPhie’s team, brushed over 600 m in 39.85.
