Boxing awards

The young Fidow’s gymnasium boxer, Hemi Dempsey, had a moment to cherish when the Canterbury Boxing Association held its presentation evening on Sunday. Dempsey, a most entertaining competitor throughout the season, was the' recipient of the Kevin Barry Jr Cup — donated and presented by the Olympic Games silver medallist — for the “trier of the year.” Inevitably, Barry himself carried away an armful of awards. He was chosen as boxing’s “sportsman of the year,” and also received the Christchurch Sports Club Trophy (for international achievement) and the Wally Darrell Cup (senior with most wins). Mr Kevin Barry sen., the trainer of the Olympic squad, won the new Burgh Cup for services to boxing.

The national intermediate welterweight champion, Danny Morris (Richmond Workingmen’s Club) was a double winner — of the Bill Lightfoot Cup (most intermediate wins) and the K. M. Barry Cup (most scientific intermediate). Other award winners were:— Canterbury Boxing Association Cup (junior with most wins), Dean Calvert (Woolston Workingmen’s Club); C.B.A. Cup (most scientific junior), Hemi Newsome (Papanui); Perfection Trophy (most scientific senior), Paul Graham (Barrys-Monier); Most Promising Boxer Trophy, Craig Houlihan (Hickson’s); Most sporting loser throughout the season, Ron Revelu (Papanui); Bill Lightfoot Cup (best Canterbury junior at national championships), Calvert; Gymnasium with most wins, Woolston Workingmen’s Club.
