Qantas tougher
NZPA-AAP Canberra Australia’s national air-, line, Qantas, is now a leaner, tougher and smarter airline after a turnaround in performance lifted its 198384 profit to sAustsB.3M, the chairman, Mr Jim Leslie, says in the annual report. This compares with a loss of $34.4M the previous year. Mr Leslie said that from mid-1985 Qantas would enter a new era with an SB6OM fleet modernisation scheme. It included the purchase of three stretched upper-deck Boeing 747 s financed under a S3O4M leverage leasing scheme and six extended-range Boeing 767 twin-engine aircraft. In the report, Mr Leslie said the main reason for the turnaround was cost cutting, which reduced expenditure by 0.8 per cent. Qantas profit on its airline operations was SSBM, the first since 1978-79.
