James Cook, THC getting together
PA Wellington James Cook Hotel, Ltd, and the Tourist Hotel Corporation have completed a management agreement for .the hotel. The agreement is after Government approval last month as part of a policy shift to allow the corporation to enter urban areas.
The Minister of Tourism, Mr Moore, said on Friday: “I can see only beneficial results from a closer collaboration between all sectors of the tourism industry.” James Cook’s chairman, Mr R. W. Steele, said that the management contract would improve the hotel’s profitability by . raising guest occupancy, especially through more overseas tourists. There would be staffing and purchasing advantages in being linked with a chain, he said. . The distinctive character of the James Cook would be retained. T.H.C.’s chief executive, Mr Mike Hoy, said the first tasks would be to line the hotel with the T.H.C.’s computerised accounting and reservations systems.' He said the contract took special account of the present hotel employees. Their conditions of employment and other service entitlements would be protected. The contract starts from November 1, but the chairman, Mr J. E. McClean, said it would be some time before any changes became apparent.
