$12M control system

One of the world’s most sophisticated refinery control systems is being installed at the Marsden Point refinery expansion project. The computerised control system, supplied by Honeywell at a cost of more than $l2 million, incorporates the latest developments in computer technology. The eight main control consoles are connected to 185 micro-computers and will automatically monitor and control the operation of the highly complex expanded refinery. Every vital function within the computer system is doubled so that in the event of failure, the reserve

equipment is automatically activated. This includes backup controls, micro-com-puters and power supply. Even if a fault develops which is not corrected by backup equipment, it is picked up on an independent alarm and safeguarding system. This immediately warns the operators if a problem develops in the process unit; in a critical situation it may automatically shut down a part of the process. The control equipment is being installed by James Watt N.Z., Ltd, and the first sections are expected to be in operation by early next year.
