Alliances

Sir,—ln his article criticising the British Labour Party’s defence policy, Lord Belof (October 19) misrepresents the situation prevailing in the entire complex of relations between the . N.A.T.O. and Warsaw Pact nations. His argument against the bloc’s dissolution is “that to accept a parallelism between N.A.T.O. and the Warsaw Pact is to deny the whole validity of the Western case.” He then advances these question-begging arguments: “The Atlantic Alliance is a freely-chosen association of sovereign States ..“The Warsaw Pact is imposed upon the States of Eastern Europe by Soviet military power ...” N.A.T.O. was imposed on Western Europe in 1949. Its increasingly aggressive behaviour imposed on the Eastern European States the necessity of forming themselves into a defensive alliance in 1955. Do any of the N.A.T.O. States enjoy so privileged a position as Rumania which has the. full military protection of its allies but. refuses to contribute militarily to their mutual defence? — Yours, etc, M. CREEL. October 19, 1984.
