Hook kills man
PA Tauranga A Mount Maunganui man on died Sunday night from head injuries suffered when a hook attached to a steel cable broke free on board a tuna boat fishing off Mount Maunganui. He was Mr David Symes, aged 32, an engineer on the Western Ranger, a tuna boat which is on lease . to Watties at Gisborne. He was knocked unconscious by a hook which flew
across the deck after a steel cable broke free about 10.30 a.m. on Sunday. The police said the hook on one of the winches apparently caught on some deck equipment and created a tension on the winch. The hook broke free and hit one of the deck crew a glancing blow and then hit Mr Symes on the head. He was knocked unconscious by the blow, and was taken to Tauranga hospital for treatment but died later.
