Japan cited as market
PA Wellington Japan has considerable potential as an expanded market for New Zealand timber, says the DirectorGeneral of Forests, Mr Andrew Kirkland, in his annual report. Japan imported six times New Zealand’s present production of wood and wood products each year, he said. The New Zealand forestry industry was now in a period when the annual wood supply would remain fairly constant, but supplies would increase rapidly in the 19905. All this increased volume would be available for export, and so market prospects must be fully explored, Mr Kirkland said. The Forest Service had sought information on Japanese wood product markets, and encouraged Japanese research studies on radiata pine.
