Second exhibition

Edith Van Haandel, a French-born Austrian artist, will hold her second exhibition in Christchurch next week. The painter, who worked for 30 years in advertising, had her first Christchurch show in 1982 at the C.S.A. Gallery. Since then she has held one exhibition and a private showing in Austria when she returned to study art in Vienna for 18 months. Born in Paris to Austrian parents, Mrs Van Haandel grew up in Vienna studying at the Graphic School of arts. Her studies were in

advertising design, lettering and typography as well as printing, engraving and drawing.

While in Vienna on her last visit Mrs Van Haandel travelled to art galleries and museums in Italy, Greece and Austria.

She studied oil painting with Peter Carer and mixed technique with Irmgard Pavlas and a number of artrelated subjects at the Vienna School of Arts.

She formed a group who, with Irmgard Pavlas as tutor, concentrated on mixed technique using egg tem-

pera and white underpainting with glazes built up in layers.

She has not used this time-consuming technique since returning to New Zealand because she has been working full-time.

The paintings in her exhibition at the C.S.A. Gallery, which opens on October 17, have all been painted since her return. The show includes some prints completed before she left.

Mrs Van Haandel is now painting full-time and plans to work towards another exhibition next July.
