Sixty paintings by New Zealand artists
“60 From ’B4” is a collection of 60 New Zealand paintings painted this year. The New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts with the sponsorship of BP New Zealand, Limited, has assembled a national exhibition of paintings completed by New Zealand artists in 1984.
During the planning of this exhibition the directors of the Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin Art Societies were asked to recommend a group of artists residing in their respective areas to be invited to submit one work each to exhibit with works by selected artists members of the Academy.
The paintings have travelled to the four main centres between July and October of this year. They have been exhibited in the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, Wellington, the Auckland Society of Arts, and the Otago Art Society, Dunedin. The Christchurch artists are Michael Ebel, “Banks Peninsula-Tapping Me on the Shoulder,” egg tempera;
Rona Ellis, “Road to the Sea, Anywhere N.Z.,” acrylic; Stephen Gibbs, “Pas De Trois,” oil-enamel; William Sutton, “Land and Sky But Mainly Sky No. 7,” oil; Doris Lusk, “Summer Landscape,” oil; Rick Edmonds, “Ripples,” oil; Josie Jay, “10 a.m. Recorded Time,” oil; Kees Bruin, “Jesus Said Night is Coming When No Man Can Work,” oil; Owen Lees, “Wellington From Kelburn,” oil; Catherine Brough, “Head of the Harbour,” oil; and Pat Unger, “Wall,” acrylic. A fully illustrated catalogue has been produced, and a complete set of colour slides made of the exhibition. These slides will be available on loan to interested institutions or groups for educational pur-
poses. It is hoped by both the Academy and BP New Zealand, Limited, that education institutions will take the opportunity to visit this national exhibition. It is a significant collection of paintings from 1984, according to Guy Ngan, the Academy’s director.
The exhibition will be on show at the Canterbury Society of Arts Gallery, 66 Gloucester Street, Christchurch from Wednesday, October 17, to Sunday, October 28.
The preview will be held on October 16 when the President of the New Zealand Academy, Mr Brian Carmody, will open the exhibition and present the "Governor General Art Award” to a prominent Christchurch artist.
