Pacific centre wanted

Christchurch needs an educational resource centre for Pacific Islanders, according to the directors of Christchurch Polytechnic. If such a centre were set up the polytechnic would be an ideal place for it, said one of the directors, Mr lan Hall, yesterday.

The directors have written to the Minister of Paci-

fic Island Affairs, Mr Prebble, with their proposal, but he has not yet made a decision.

Such centres have already been set up in Auckland and Wellington, said Mr Hall. With an increasing number of Pacific Islanders coming to Christchurch it would be timely to set one up here. “Resource centres act as

a focal point for Pacific Islanders in the educational sense. Teachers can be provided with information on multi-culturalism and do inservice training courses on multi-culturalism through the centres.”

One of the Labour Party’s election policies had been a commitment to the expansion of such centres to other places, Mr Hall said.
