Clerks not paid enough
Miscalculations in service bonus payments made to 14 Christchurch Drainage Board clerical workers mean that the board now owes more than $lO,OOO in arrears payments.
The gross arrears payment due was $10,920, said the board’s chief administration’ officer, Mr Norman Kelly, in his report to the staff and tenders committee meeting yesterday. The Canterbury Clerical Workers’ Union had written querying the service bonus payments now being paid to their members, he said.
It had pointed out that the award provided for a much higher payment than that being paid, which was in accordance with the Salaried Staff Association Conditions of Service Agreement.
“Investigations show that service bonus payments for clerical workers have never been in accordance with the award,” said Mr Kelly. “Whatever the justification for not paying the correct service bonus, it is clear that an error has
occurred and that the board should now put matters right.”
The committee recommended that payment of the correct bonus be approved.
