Lack of emergency beds studied
Parliamentary reporter A. study had been started in Christchurch to gather statistics on the size of the problem of the lack of emergency beds for single women in Christchurch, the Minister of Social Welfare and of Women’s Affairs, Mrs Hercus has said. She was replying to questions in Parliament by Mrs Margaret Austin (Lab., Yaldhurst). Mrs Hercus said that there was no evidence on which to base policy for
Christchurch or national policy. The Government would need to have a complete picture before it could start setting priorities, she said. Christchurch had the Salvation Army home in Bealey Avenue, and the Anglican Social Services night shelter, plus seven other, houses, and she had received submissions from the Riccarton Inter-Church Community Group on the need for more, said Mrs Hercus.
