Houses for women without children sought
Wellington reporter Representations from Community Volunteers in Christchurch seeking the widening of the criteria governing the allocation of emergency houses so that they may include accommodation for women without children have been received by the Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs Hercus. The present emergenncy housing criteria allowed houses to be let for three
purposes — families with acute housing problems, women’s refuges, and a smaller number for young • people at risk. In Christchurch the house for young people at risk was already catering exclusively for girls and young women, Mrs Hercus said. A third refuge had been allocated recently to the Riccarton Inter-Church Community Group to reduce pressure on existing women’s refuge facilities.
