Brain transplants to cure mental diseases
PA Auckland Brain transplants to cure mental diseases will be available within 10 years, according to a visiting mental health specialist. : A former director of the United States National Institute of Mental Health, Professor Herbert Pardes, said in Auckland that transplants would cure Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases and possibly schizophrenia. Professor Pardes said that the operation, which replaced the diseased part of the brain with tissue
from the adrenal gland, was a big step forward for mental health. Already two Parkinson’s disease patients had successfully undergone the operation in Sweden, he said. A new type of brain scan could “see” psychiatric disorders and mental diseases, he said. This could greatly improve the ability to diagnose problems. Professor Pardes said the latest research was the result of increased spending in mental health research.
