Golden oldies on parade
Early arrivals at Lancaster Park for tomorrow’s Ranfurly Shield challenge will be able to see .for themselves what golden oldies rugby is all about. The curtain-raiser is between two golden oldies (over 35) sides, the Marist Marauders, of Christchurch, and the Waitaki Wasps, of Oamaru.
The Marist side includes a number of former senior players, including the All Black, Vance Stewart, and a senior referee, Tom Hannan.
Waitaki has three All Blacks, lan Hurst, Jeff Matheson and Lyn Davis, who is being “loaned” ’to the club. Davis was Canterbury’s half-back for many years.
The game, which will begin at 1.55 p.m., will be played under the golden oldies format' of three 20minute spells. Otherwise the normal rules will apply. An earlier curtain-raiser, beginning at 1 p.m., will be between the Canterbury primary schools’ team and the Canterbury twelfth grade side.
