Christchurch visitors shape attractively

Special correspondent Auckland Mister Square showed his fitness for the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, with a fine performance at a matinee meeting at Alexandra Park yesterday. The backmarker on 60m in the main event for trotters, Mister Square finished determinedly and scored by a nose from Armbro Almont (50), with Law Holiday (20) half a length back third.

Mister Square has not raced for four months but he has done a lot of work and his showing indicated he would be by no means a forlorn chance in the Golden Oldies Hockey Handicap on Saturday.

'I 8 Armbro Almont, a visitor from Christchurch, also

shaped attractively. He was driven by the Kumeu reinsman, Don Hayes, who will drive him in the Brownson All Star Handicap. Kind Nature, also from Christchurch, had a run in the trial for pacers assessed on Cl and C2. He conceded a start of about 20m and won by a nose from Broomfield Breeze. Pacing Fella was a neck back third. Kind Nature, which has a C 9 assessment, was disappointing when only seventh on the first night of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting last Saturday. He has obviously made good progress since and may go better in this week's C. F. Mark Memorial. Broomfield Breeze and Pacing Fella shaded solidly in preparation fd<the Ernie

Henshaw Mobile Pace.

One of the most impressive performances was that of Lucky Batch in a heat of the event for maiden pacers. He was much superior over the final stages and won by a length and a quarter from Bertie Mac, Tabella Belle was half a length away third. Lucky Batch looks a top prospect for the Hamilton Plumbing Mobile Pace at Claudelands tomorrow night. The fastest time in the maiden pacing heats was returned by Berndon Star, which went 2min 50.5 s for 2200 m.

A member of Roy and Barry Purdon’s team, he looks above average. His first race will be awaited with interest.
