Auckland stakes increase

PA Auckland The Auckland Trotting Club yesterday announced a 10 per cent across-the-board increase to its basic stakes schedule, starting with the club’s meetings on October 16 and 20. It says the increase — well over $200,000 — boosted stakes to more than $2 million. Meanwhile, the club’s president, Mr Noel Taylor, said that stakes for the six major races of the season, headed by the $200,000 Max Harvey Auckland Trotting Cup, are up 30 per cent on last season.

Mr Taylor said top racing and top horses would get people back to the course. ’’Thanks to sponsors like Max Harvey and Benson and Hedges, to name just a couple,” he said, “we are taking the offensive and are sure we can win.”
