Ski field conditions
Conditions at South Island ski fields, as reported by the New Zealand Snow Centre at 1 p.m. yesterday, were — Mt Hutt: Base 35cm; last fall 17cm August 23; spring snow; main runs groomed; chains to be carried. Coronet Peak: Base average 10cm, last fall 3cm August 23, surface hard in mornings, softening during day; double chairlift operating from half-way; chains to be carried. Cardrona: Spring snow; chains to be carried. Dobson: Firm snow, spring ski-ing. Harris Mountains: Base 120 cm; powder snow. Ohau: Base 80cm; last fall August 30; closed yesterday
but reopening likely. Porter Heights: Last fall August 23; beginners’ area closed. Tasman Glacier. Some powder on shaded slopes; good spring ski-ing; ski planes operating. Ben Ohau: Base 250 cm; last fall August 31; good spring skiing; some powder in shaded areas. Tekapo: Closed until further notice. Treble Cone: Some bare patches; ski-ing marginal on lower slopes. Broken River: Base 20cm; chains to be carried. Cheesman: Conditions marginal. Craigieburn: Open subject to weather.
