Derlin in N.Z. squad
PA Wellington Bruce Derlin has been named a member of the New Zealand Davis Cup tennis squad to play Ecuador later this month, but he is unlikely to travel to Ecuador for the tie. The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association chairman, lan Wells, announced the squad as Chris Lewis, Russell Simpson, David Mustard and Derlin. The non-playing captain, Jeff Simpson, and the assistant coach, Tony Roche, will be travelling with the squad for the match to be held in Guayaquil from September
28 to 30. Derlin has replaced the Wellingtonian, Steve Guy, from the squad which lost to Paraguay in February. Mr Wells said it was disposed not to take Derlin because in Simpson and Roche there would be more than adequate practice partners for the players. With the expected difficulties in Ecuador and the time available for preparation, “anything surplus may aggravate the situation.”
Derlin would be in West Germany during the tie and would be called if required, Mr Wells said.
