Passive Prince should win at Feilding

Special correspondent Wellington

Passive Prince could further enhance his prospects of accompanying his stablemate. Prince of Wales, to Melbourne by winning the Tom Cook Handicap (2000 m at the Feilding Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow.

Passive Prince is a good class galloper and has won seven races since clearing maiden ranks just over 12 months ago. He has had two starts on his current campaign, producing a bold second fresh-up behind Our Boyfriend at Foxton on August 18 and then finishing sixth behind Prince of Wales in the Hastings Centennial Cup on August 24, Passive Prince encountered a very rocky passage in the Hastings event and did particularly well to finish as close as he did. The smallness of the field tomorrow will be in his favour and track conditions will not worry him. He is adept on most types of footing. With the weights being scaled down, he comes in at 54.5 kg, which is less than he carried at both Foxton and Hastings. The War Hawk II gelding, Exocet, is a very promising young stayer. He is yet to win in open company but has not been disgraced in four starts in the top grade. Last time out he finished a very creditable fourth in the Hastings Centennial Cup. He is likely to have been improved by that run as it was his first for some six weeks. The top weight, Kiwi, will

once again be the centre of attention. He will be having his third start back from a spell but his outing at Wanganui last week was little more than an exercise after being checked out of contention by the fallen runner, Rae’s Dream.

He is in fine heart at present and though the 2000 m may be a little short, it would be no surprise to see him running on strongly to take some of the money. Despite the smallness of the field, it has attracted a very interesting line-up with the likes of Suttle Knight, Payco and Bronze Valley included, while Tredici and Vincere could not be ruled out of contention on their latest efforts.

Kingdom Bay, rated the second top colt on the two-year-old Free Handicap last season, is expected to return to form when he steps out in the Feilding 10,000, the second leg of the T.A.B. double.

The event is for three-year-olds and has attracted a good line-up. However, Kingdom Bay should have their measure. He was far from disgraced when fifth in the Wanganui Guineas and will have improved with that outing. The Otehi Bay colt showed himself in good light with an impressive win at the Stratford trials on Tuesday and he should strip in peak condition tomorrow. Koberstein and Wagner are other highly regarded three-year-olds. Both were unbeaten in two starts as juveniles though both have tasted defeat in their sole starts this term. Koberstein, a big strong individual, did not appear at home in the conditions when third at Wanganui on August 25, and Wagner was apparently also unsuited by the heavy track when fifth at Te Rapa on August 18. They should quickly atone.
