Beauty contest
Sir, — I note with concern (August 28) the Christchurch City Council’s support of the "Miss AsiaSouth Pacific” beauty contest, and that the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, justifies this from a “business perspective.” Beauty contests reinforce the view that women are merely objects. Until these and other forms of sexist exploitation are stopped, we can expect little change in male attitudes which result in violence towards women. It appals me that the City Council deems it appropriate to spend public funds on the exploitation of women. — Yours, etc. MARK DAVIS. August 29, 1984.
