Alcohol abuse
Sir, — The New Zealand Temperance Alliance questions why the Alcoholic Liquor Advisory Council does not promote total abstinence. A.L.A.C. was set up by an Act of Parliament to promote moderation, not abstinence. It is clear from the liquor polls that an overwhelming majority of New Zealanders do not want prohibition, so why try to change the behaviour of people when they feel so strongly about it? The experience of other countries has shown that prohibition is impossible to enforce, with bootlegging and problems with poor-quality alcohol being common. Ray Spring (August 28) says that promoting abstinence has significantly reduced alcohol consumption. A.L.A.C. collects national statistics on alcohol consumption and would not support this claim. — Yours, etc., GEOFF ELVY, A.L.A.C. Southern Regional Officer. August 29, 1984.
