Sunday evening licence approved

The Pagoda Court Restaurant has had its licence to sell food and drink extended to Sunday evenings. The Licensing Control Commission has amended the restaurant’s licence to allow dining and dancing until 11 p.m. on Sundays. The director of the company which owns the restaurant, Mr Alex You Yan Lee, said there was a demand for the restaurant to serve the many tourists who arrived in Christchurch on Sunday evenings. Having booked into their hotels, these tourists decided to eat out, he igaid. ■ This was supported by a senior consultant of' Mount

Cook Line Tours, Mrs B. A. Sansom, who said the restaurant was used frequently by overseas tour groups. The Hotel Association, represented by Mr A. G. Sherriff, said that advertising by the applicant had in the past exceeded his licence. Brochures and newspaper advertisements were produced as evidence of this. The commission said that it shared the concern of the Hotel Association, but it was satisfied that there was a demand for longer hours on Sundays. It granted the amended licence subject to five conditions, including a ruling that drinking was notSo be permitted near the bar.
