Boxing title fight
NZPA-Reuter Mexico City The World Boxing Council heavyweight champion, Tim Witherspoon, of the United States, will defend his title tomorrow in Las Vegas against another American, Pinkion Thomas. It will be his first defence since winning an eliminating bout for the vacant title against Greg Page in March. His opponent is the W.B.C.’s third-ranked contender. Witherspoon has won 18 professional fights and lost one while Thomas has won 23 and drawn one. Witherspoon’s only defeat was at the hands of Larry Holmes who renounced the W.B.C. heavyweight championship last December rather than comply with a W.B.C. directive ordering him to fight Page.
