Random tests and speed limits

Sir,—Drinking and driving do not mix and the combination can be deadly. However, our protection of privacy is at stake when it comes to the random testing of every tenth car or so. Speed limits today are still those of the days of metal roads and old cars. Modern advancements allow people to drive safely at much higher speeds on the open road. It is in a person’s best interest to drive responsibly, since motorists do not want to injure themselves or other drivers. Keeping speed limits low and increasing random testing will not get to the major cause of most accidents — intoxication and the abuse of alcohol.—Yours, etc., J. S. SMART. August 29, 1984.
