Destruction of dogs
Sir, — The decision to destroy 16 dogs held in the Christchurch City Council’s shelter after a confirmed case of parvovirus will have saddened many caring people. Mr A. P. Millthorpe, the Chief City Health Inspector, commented that these dogs were .strays and would ultimately have been destroyed if they were not claimed. That is cold comfort. The irony is that some had new owners waiting for their release. Considering that the shelter was closed, is constructed and managed to contain infection and has an isolation unit, could not the decision to destroy all have been postponed for a few more days? It is well known that in all outbreaks of contagious diseases — human or animal — not all succumb. Once again, stray dogs — the pitiful products of man’s inhuman, irresponsible attitudes and actions have paid the price — while the guilty go free. — Yours, etc., ESTELLE WIN. August 27, 1984.
