Nuclear ship ban
Sir, — The Australian Capital Territory division of Scientists Against Nuclear Arms (S.A.N.A.) fully supports the New Zealand Government’s stand against visits
by nuclear-armed and nuclearpowered ships to New Zealand ports. As the super-Powers draw all of us further into the nuclear web, it is heartening to see a Government allied with the United States act as New Zealand has done. Both the super-Powers are increasingly dependent upon the compliance of the rest of the world to maintain the tyranny of the nuclear threat, to which they hold as hostage not only each other, but also the entire planet. Actions such as New Zealand’s are an important step in showing both super-Powers that the present balance of terror is not acceptable, and that they must begin the process of disarmament. — Yours, etc.,
Dr MARK DIESENDORF, for S.A.N.A. Canberra, A.C.T. August 24, 1984.
