Escaped prisoners remanded

Greymouth reporter Two escapers from the Rangipo Corrective Training Centre at Turangi in the North Island faced four charges of converting cars as well as escaping when they appeared before a Justice of the Peace, Mr D. H. Copeland, in the Children and Young Persons Court at Greymouth yesterday. The two escapers, aged 16, entered no plea to the charges relating to the taking of the cars at Rotoiti, Darfield, Picton and Ruatapu. The last car was taken on Sunday evening, but the two were pursued and apprehended after they broke through a Ministry of Transport road block. Sergeant P. M. Stevens

told the Court that the two had been sentenced to three months corrective training on August 8, but had escaped 12 days later. They were remanded in custody to appear again in the District Court at Christchurch on September 3. Miss B. H. McGrane appeared as duty solicitor. A man, arrested on a charge of rape at Westport on Saturday, was remanded on the indictably laid charge in custody to Christchurch on September 3 for the setting of a date for depositions. Mr Copeland suppressed the name of the man, aged 41, and that, of the complainant.
