More job vacancies shown in survey
PA Wellington A Department of Labour survey released yesterday shows a continuing increase in job vacancies. The Department’s halfyearly survey conducted on February 28, 1984, records 7724 vacancies in the surveyed industries. This was an increase of 2432 over the figure of 5292 recorded in the survey of August, 1983, and an increase of 3039 vacancies from that of 4685 in February, 1983. The survey covered more than 78,000 establishments employing an estimated 80 per cent of the total New Zealand work-force. The distribution of the vacancies in the different sectors at February, 1984, compared with the same date in 1983 was: Private Sector: full-time 5762 (up 2109) part-time 68 sector: full-
time 256 (up 38), part-time 62 (up 51). Government corporation: full-time 111 (up 28), parttime 1 (down 4). Local authority: full-time 770 (up 118), part-time 82 (up 29). All sectors: full-time 6899 (up 2293), part-time 825 (up 139). Full-time vacancies recorded for the main industry groups compared with the same period last year were: Forestry and logging, 15 (no change). Mining and quarrying, 10 (up 2). Manufacturing 2469 (up 1494). Electricity, gas and water, 91 (down 49). Construction 870 (up 542). Trade, restaurants, and hotels 1044 (up 447). Transport and communication 151 (up 60). Finance, insurance, real
estate, etc. 602 (up 166). Community and personal services 1647 (up 149). Of the 6899 full-time vacancies recorded in February, 1984, 2079 or 30 per cent were open to young people aged under 20. This was an increase of 904 vacancies available to those under 20 from February, 1983. The number of longer duration vacancies, that is full-time positions unfilled for more than six weeks, at February 28, 1984, was 1760 or 572 more than for the previous February. Districts in which significant changes in the number of vacancies were recorded between February, 1983 and February, 1984, were: Christchurch (up 417), Wellington (up 223),Auckland (up 408), Lower Hutt (up 197),Manakau (up 367), Palmerston North (up 146),Wh|ngarei (up 354), Hamilton (up 116).
