NZPA-Reuter New York The top seed, Ivan Lendl, of Czechoslovakia, comeleted his warm-up for the United States Open by beating the second-seeded Andres Gomez, of Ecuador, 62, 6-4, in the final of the SUSISO,OOO Hamlet Challenge Cup in Jericho. Lendl, ranked second in the world, fell behind 2-1 in the first set, but then won seven consecutive games to win the set and take a 2-0 lead in the second set. The world fifth-ranked Gomez, broke Lendl’s service in the fourth game of the second set to reach 2-2. Lendl immediately replied by breaking Gomez’s service to love in the fifth
game. Each held service the rest of the way. In the doubles, final, Tomas Smid (Czechoslovakia) and Wojtek Fibak (Poland) beat Heinz Gunthardt (Switzerland) and Henrik Sundstrom (Sweden), 7-6, 64. © In Rye Brook, New York, Vitas Gerulaitis. beat fellow American, Chip Hooper, 7-6, 6-3 to win the men’s title at the Westchester world invitational tournament. Melissa Brown, aged 16, of the United States, in her second tournament since turning professional, captured the women’s championship with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Steffi Graf, aged 15, of West Germany.
