Win, loss in Hatch Cup
Special correspondent. The Canterbury Hatch Cup boys’ hockey team had mixed fortunes in the opening rounds of the annual tournament in Pukekohe yesterday. Canterbury was unexpectedly beaten by Otago in the morning round, but redeemed itself with a later victory against Manawatu. The Canterbury boys failed to make the most of their opportunities against Otago, and the opposition underlined this folly by snapping up chances to win,
4-2. . In the afternoon, however, Canterbury showed improvement to beat Manawatu conclusively, but Otago stumbled in the face of a spirited West Coast effort and lost by a goal. Ashburton, which looked good in the first round as it peppered the rival net with 10 goals, failed to measure up in the afternoon and was soundly beaten by Gore, a team drawn entirely from one school. Overnight rain after recent regular wet weather
softened the pitches, but they stood up well to the wear and tear. Results of matches involving teams from “The Press” circulation area were:— First round. — Ashburton 10, Tauranga 0; South Canterbury 2, Nelson 0; Otago 4, Canterbury 2; Counties 7, West Coast 0; Wairarapa 5, Marlborough 1. Second round.— Gore 4, Ashburton 2; Horowbenua S, Nelson 3; North Shore 4, South Canterbury 1; West Coast 3, Otago 2; Canterbury 4, Manawatu 1; Marlborough 5, Northland 2.
