Cumberland looks top chance today

Special correspondent Auckland The presence in the field of Cumberland, Boilermaker and Our Charlie helps make the Huia Handicap, for all its shortage of starters, one of the most interesting races at Ellerslie today. The race is the first leg of the Auckland Racing club’s T.A.B. double. Cumberland, an Awapuni four-year-old trained by the Kayes, father and daughter partnership, has won four of his last six races. Our Charlie is one of the better-performed middledistance horses, down to make a fresh start and have his first race from the stable of Colin .Tillings, who took him over at the beginning of the year. Boilermaker, a smart Takanini three-year-old has had nothing like the same let-up but this will be his first start since his training was halted briefly. A persistent stonebruise has kept Our Charlie from returning to racing before this and a lesser one caused Boilermaker to be eased for a time. Now five years old, Our Charlie raced only once last season, but as a three-year-old he won four races, showing plenty of ability, especially on soft or easy ground. Boilermaker won his first four races last season in a row and another one, last month, at Avondale. A four-year-old gelding, by Riverton from Sweet Leilani, Cumberland is getting through the intermediate classes as though likely to become very good. Three of his last four wins were in his home districts, at Trentham, Otaki and Awapuni but he was successful, also, at Tauranga, on June 23 over 1300 m in real style. His last start was at Otaki on July 25, when he won a class two 1600 m race in very heavy ground. The Huia Handicap is the second leg of the double. Devil Gold, though going for his fourth win on end, seems the one to beat again in the first leg, the Heritage Handicap. Jbt: 4 Tab: AR TAB.
