Easy victory
Cashmere-Wanderers made certain of a semi-final place in the English Cup soccer competition with an emphatic 7-1 win over Western at English Park last evening. Steve Bailey contributed three goals, Neil Lilley two, with Paul Harrison anti Peter Shea adding one each. John Brand scored for Western.
The other semi-finalist in group one will be either New Brighton or South Canterbury United, who meet on Saturday. A point separates the two, but a draw will be enough for
Brighton to advance. In the second match, Rangers convincingly beat the group two winners, Shamrock, 4-1. John Mitchell scored twice, Wayne Stapley once and an own goal from a Shamrock defender put Rangers on the board early on. Peter Wilson scored for Shamrock from close range. Rangers lie second in group two, but Christchurch United's reserves and Halswell United are both well placed to head them off for a semi-final place with matches in hand, to be played on Saturday.
