Bomber misses stadium fly-past

NZPA Los Angeles Practising for the Olympic Games opening ceremony proved too much for Bomber, a rare bald eagle. Overweight and ageing, it died this week. Bomber, one of about 5000 bald eagles left in the United States, was to have flown a circuit of the Coliseum, the main stadium, during the opening. The bald eagle is the national symbol and is also represented at the games by Sam, the official mascot. Bomber had been loaned to the organising committee by the United States Wildlife Service, which is charged with protecting the endangered species. Olympic organisers confirmed yesterday that his trainer had become concerned when he noticed one morning that Bomber had lost his co-ordination. He died on the way to the veterinarian. . A 13-year-old golden bagle will dip his wings in salute to “Bomber” over the Coliseum at the week-end.
