U.S. aircraft at Harewood

Sir,—Last February I wrote to the United States Embassy in Wellington asking for information about United States Air Force cargo aircraft using the Christchurch Airport. I said that I had observed C--1418 Starlifters parked at Harewood and provided details of dates and aircraft tail numbers. I wanted to know where the aircraft had been loaded, which route or routes they took to reach Christchurch, the nature of the cargo unloaded, approximately what proportion of the cargo remained on board the aircraft, where the aircraft were bound and what route they took to reach their destination. After two months I had not received a reply, so I repeated my request. More than two months again has elapsed and I am forced to conclude that the United States officials regard this information as secret. So much for United States military use of the Christchurch Airport being an open book.—Yours, etc., VICKI BAKKER. July 22, 1984.
