‘La Traviata’ contest results

There is a surprisingly large number of opera fans in Christchurch, judging by the response to last week’s competition held in conjunction with the screening of Zeffirelli’s version of “La Traviata," which will begin at the Westend tomorrow. The Westend had offered six double passes to the first six correct entries to the following two questions: 1. A Verdi opera was made into a film, starring Sophia Loren, about 30 years ago. What was its name? “Aida.” 2. What are the names of the two Shakespeare works which Zeffirelli made into films, and which actors did they feature? “Romeo and Juliet,” with Leonard Whit-

ing and Olivia Hussey; and “The Taming of the Shrew,” with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. The six winners are: M. C. , Jackson, of Christchurch 4; Jill Richardson, Christchurch 1; Colleen M. Ander- . son, Christchurch 4; Mrs Razia Chiba, Christchurch 5; Mrs M. Botha, Lyttelton; and Roger E. Beaumont, Lyttelton. Another correspondent,; Gary J. Fox, of Christchurch, suggested that a ' group of blind people be given the opportunity to hear the music of “La Traviata” in the Westend’s excellent sound system. As a result, about a dozen people have been invited through the Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind.
