Mini owners plan party

NZPA-AAP London Thousands of Mini car owners from around the world will celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Britain’s favourite little car with a birthday party at Donnington Park race circuit near Derby next month. Minis will race against each other, compete in a tug-o’-war and various other competitions at the circuit on August 26, the “Sun” newspaper reported.

Mini enthusiasts from Europe, the United States and even Japan are planning to take part, according to Austin-Rover, organisers of the “Mini 25 Celebration.” The Mini first appeared on August 26, 1959. It then cost £496 ($1300). The car was the brainchild of Sir Alex Issigonis, who was responsible for much of the design work on Britain’s first million-selling car, the Morris Minor.
