No regulations om escalators

PA Wellington No safety or maintenance regulations cover escalators, according to the two companies which install almost all New Zealand’s escalators. Recently a boy, aged two, fell from an escalator in Wellington and was knocked unconscious. A Ministry of Transport spokesman said escalators fell into a “grey area” and that inspection programmes were done only by the companies who installed them. The two main installers in New Zealand are Otis and Electric Construction, Ltd. The manager of Otis, Mr Ron Barr, said there were no regulations covering escalators but his company

offered a maintenance contract. However, there was no obligation for an owner to take out a service contract or, if he did, there was no requirement that regular checks be made, Mr Barr . said. The manager of Electric Construction, Ltd, who did not want to be named, said it was important to realise that no-one was required to inspect escalators. He said there were many accidents on escalators, although they were not serious. Last'week, for instance, a child got his fingers stuck in a hand-rail at New Plymouth. “There is not a lot you can do and this is why Ministry of Transport has wiped its hands of them,” he said.
