Forces’ deficiencies described

NZPA-Reuter Washington A Congressional report says that the United States armed forces are incapable of sustaining combat for any extended length of time. The report, which the Defence Department said “appears accurate,” found that the United States Navy could not handle combat operations on the sea and in the air for more than a week.

The capability of the Air Force in any conventional war agaionst the Soviet Union was described as limited. To win a conflict with N.A.T.O. forces in Europe the United States Army would need 45 divisions, the report said. The Army has 16 active divisions, and making up the difference could cost SUSI 42 billion, the report said. The Defence Department, commenting on the’ findings in a supplement to the report, said that the Reagan Administration had inherited the deficiencies and was moving to correct them.

The report was released by the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee.
