More money for roads

Wellington reporter An $11.7 million increase in reading estimates for 1984-85 — to $371.7 million — has been approved by the National Roads Board. The State highways allocation has been increased $7.95M to ?180.45M, the local authorities allocation $3.62M to $149.12M. April payments of an extra $2.5M were also approved. However, the flood damage allocation has been cut $2.5M down to SIIM. Change in board methods

to an “unders and overs” policy meant the board had been able to start new reading works totalling $21.71M in the year, said the deputy director of roading, Dr R. J. Dunlop. Among the projects which had benefited were the Lower Hollyford Road ($30,000), Totaranui Road in Golden Bay ($5000), and Wharf Road on the Chatham Islands ($55,000). Reconstruction of the main road approaching Timaru was also brought forward.
